Green coffee bean extract is rich in chlorogenic acids. Small trials suggest a modest effect on body weight, but the evidence base is thin and one high-profile study was retracted.

What is green coffee bean extract?

Green coffee beans are simply coffee beans that have not been roasted. Roasting breaks down a large share of the chlorogenic acids, a family of polyphenols, so unroasted beans contain much more of them than a regular cup of coffee. Green coffee bean extract is made by soaking and concentrating these beans, and supplements are usually standardized to a percentage of chlorogenic acid, often around 45 to 50 percent. Many extracts also contain some caffeine unless they are decaffeinated.

Chlorogenic acids are thought to affect how the body handles glucose, for example by slowing glucose absorption in the gut and influencing glucose release from the liver. Those mechanisms come mainly from laboratory and animal research.

What the research says

Green coffee extract became famous as a weight-loss supplement after heavy media promotion in 2012. The trial most often cited at the time was later retracted by the journal, which is a reminder that early hype did not rest on solid ground.

More recent analyses are more modest. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis in Systematic Reviews looked specifically at green coffee extract providing at least 500 mg of chlorogenic acid a day. It found only three eligible randomized trials with 103 participants. Combined, those studies showed an average body weight reduction of about 1.3 kg compared with placebo. The authors themselves noted the limited sample size and short-term nature of the studies and called for long-term research on effectiveness and safety.

A loss of roughly 1 kg over several weeks is real but small, and it comes from very few people. That is why we rate the evidence as limited. Green coffee extract is not harmful for most healthy adults at studied doses, but it should not be expected to cause noticeable weight loss without changes in diet and activity.

How it’s used in supplements

Green coffee extract appears in capsules, powders and many “metabolism” blends. Products vary widely in how much chlorogenic acid and caffeine they contain, so look for a label that states both. Studies on weight have generally used extracts delivering around 500 mg of chlorogenic acid daily, taken before meals.

Side effects reported with green coffee products are usually mild and related to caffeine: headache, jitteriness, upset stomach and trouble sleeping. People sensitive to caffeine, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those with heart rhythm problems or uncontrolled blood pressure should be cautious. Because chlorogenic acid may affect blood sugar, people on diabetes medication should check with their doctor.

In Java Burn, chlorogenic acid is listed as a headline ingredient, but the official page does not say how much a packet contains, so it is impossible to compare it with the doses used in research.

Safety and cautions

May contain caffeine; can cause jitteriness, headache, stomach upset or poor sleep. Use caution with diabetes medication, heart rhythm problems, high blood pressure, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Talk to your doctor before using any supplement, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or managing a health condition.
