What is Bacillus coagulans?
Bacillus coagulans is a lactic-acid-producing bacterium that forms spores. Spores are a dormant, protective form that helps the organism survive heat, storage and stomach acid, which is one reason manufacturers like to put it in gummies, baked goods and shelf-stable capsules. Taxonomists have recently reclassified it as Heyndrickxia coagulans, and older products sometimes labeled it Lactobacillus sporogenes. Most research describes it by a specific strain name, such as Unique IS2, MTCC 5856 (sold as LactoSpore) or GBI-30, 6086.
Like other probiotics, it is defined as a live microorganism intended to provide a health benefit when consumed. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health stresses an important point: different probiotics may have different effects, and evidence for one strain does not automatically apply to another strain or species.
What the research says
The most consistent human evidence for B. coagulans involves digestive symptoms, especially abdominal pain and bloating in adults with irritable bowel symptoms. A 2023 network meta-analysis in Nutrients pooled 81 randomized controlled trials with 9,253 participants. It ranked B. coagulans MTCC 5856 and B. coagulans Unique IS2 among the most effective probiotics for improving abdominal pain, and MTCC 5856 ranked well for stool form in people with diarrhea-predominant symptoms. The authors concluded that only some probiotics help with particular outcomes, and that further studies are needed.
A good example of an individual trial is a 2019 randomized, double-blind study in Scientific Reports. Researchers gave 136 adults with irritable bowel symptoms either 2 billion CFU of B. coagulans Unique IS2 or a placebo daily for eight weeks. The probiotic group reported greater reductions in abdominal discomfort and more complete bowel movements, and the probiotic was well tolerated. Note that several authors were employed by the company that makes this strain, which is common in probiotic research and is a reason to wait for independent replication.
For skin, the picture is less developed. Reviews of the gut-skin axis, such as a 2023 review in Nutrients, describe plausible mechanisms involving inflammation and immune signaling, but they do not establish that B. coagulans in particular improves skin appearance in healthy adults.
Overall, we rate the evidence as moderate for digestive comfort with specific, named strains at studied doses, and limited for other uses.
How it’s used in supplements
B. coagulans appears in capsules, gummies, powders and fortified foods. Doses in trials typically range from about 1 to 2 billion CFU a day, taken for four to twelve weeks. When you compare products, check two things on the label: whether the strain is named (for example “B. coagulans MTCC 5856” rather than just “B. coagulans”) and the CFU count guaranteed through the expiration date. A product that does not name its strain cannot point to strain-specific research. In PrimeBiome, the label lists 500 million CFU of an unnamed B. coagulans strain, which is lower than the 2 billion CFU used in the Unique IS2 trial above.
Probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy people, with mild gas or bloating being the most common complaints early on. NCCIH notes that serious infections have been reported in premature infants and that people with weakened immune systems or serious illness should use probiotics only under medical supervision.
Safety and cautions
Generally well tolerated; mild gas or bloating may occur at first. People who are immunocompromised, critically ill or have a central line should not use probiotics without medical supervision. Benefits are strain-specific, so an unnamed strain may not match research results.
